What are your options for classes and practice?

Bloomington Fencing Club has several different ways that you can participate in our sport. The best options for you will depend on your level of experience, your personal goals and the time you have available. Click "Read More" for a description of our classes, lessons and open fencing time.

Standard Class: These classes teach basic and intermediate skills in a collaborative and fun environment. The primary goal of these classes is to provide a general foundation for the life long enjoyment of this sport. In addition to fencing skills, we teach the basics of refereeing and armoring. Beginners must start in these classes, but they are structured to provide challenges and growth to more experienced fencers, too.

Intensive Class: These classes are designed for fencers who wish to learn in a more competitive environment. The classes will have a more significant conditioning element and will be more physically and mentally demanding. Participation in these classes requires the permission of the coach, commitment to regular attendance, and completion of a personal goals work-sheet. Students in this class will identify a tournament and prepare as a team and as individuals for their event. Fencers will be expected to attend at least one tournament, either as a competitor, armorer, referee, or to provide support to their teammates.

Individual Lessons: These are a one on one lesson with a coach. They last around 20 minutes and are personalized to each fencer. Lessons are available by appointment. New fencers are recommended to take a standard class for a couple of months prior to arranging lessons.

Open Fencing: Open fencing time is for fencers to practice what they have learned in classes and lessons. It is also a time when fencers not participating in the classes can practice. All fencers are encouraged to participate in open fencing regardless of skill level and experience.
