Division I NAC, Richmond, VA
This was a huge NAC - 237 entrants in Div 1 Men's Epee. I warmed up well, and felt pretty good going into the pools. I wasn't extremely sharp, though - not like Remenyik - and it showed.
I didn't do as well in my pools as I know I could have, and that definitely hurt my chances in the DE's. I went 3-3(+2) in a pool that was not as murderous as many others I saw. I feel like I would have been 5-1 or even 6-0. (Jacob Osbourne was fencing very well, though; 6-0 would have been awfully tough, but I think I could have done it.)
I came out of the pools seeded 102nd, and beat a lower seed to get into the round of 128. But that's where my low seed hurt: I had to fence a member of the Italian national team. I don't feel like I should have seen someone that good until the 64.
I lost badly - 15-5, and ended up 99th. For the way I was fencing, I think that is just about right. If I'd been fencing that way in a good local comp, I would have been in the final, and might have won. In this environment, it gets me 99th. :)
